Medallion Enhances Local Hosting with New Data Centre Infrastructure

Medallion Data Centre, a subsidiary of Digital Realty, has unveiled its second data centre in Lagos in response to the growing demand for local content and data hosting by customers. This new facility, named LOC2, offers an additional one-megawatt IT capacity and will be interconnected with the existing LOS1 data centre, known as the most interconnected facility in the West African sub-region and a key peering point for the region.

Ikechukwu Nnamani, CEO of Medallion Data Centre, explained that LOC2 serves as an extension of the original data centre, which had reached its capacity due to customer demand for more space and capacity. He highlighted the ongoing infrastructure development in Lagos, including facilities in Lekki, which are part of the Africa submarine cable network.

 

The LOS2 Data Centre is a three-floor building with one megawatt of IT capacity, 232 racks, 8 kilowatt rack density, 230V PDU model, and dual power supply. It also expands peering and connectivity capacity, is less than 1km from the hyperscale LOS3 data centre under development, features redundant fiber connections to LOS1, LOS3, LLK1, and LKK2, and adheres to Tier 3+ DLR Global operational standards.

In terms of electrical infrastructure, the data centre employs a 2N configuration for IT systems, with each power room housing a 2600KW UPS system and VRLA batteries providing 5 minutes of EOL at 1200KW per side. Cooling technology is DX, redundancy is N+1 in all rooms, and two 2650kVA generators are used for power backup.

 

Mike Hollands, Vice President of Market Development at Digital Realty, expressed excitement about the data centre’s launch, highlighting the tremendous value and success of the original data centre. He emphasized the importance of expanding the infrastructure to make Nigeria’s internet ecosystem stronger and more robust.
