Mafab Communications, a Nigerian telecommunications company that acquired a 5G license in 2021, is set to commence its 5G services by the end of the first quarter of 2025. The initial rollout will feature 102 operational sites in Kano and Abuja, requiring subscribers to purchase routers to access the network.
The company’s Chief Operating Officer, Adebayo Onigbanjo, stated that Mafab has been focusing on building robust infrastructure and extending coverage in key cities to ensure reliable and widespread 5G access. Significant investments have been made in Radio Access Network (RAN), transport, and intelligent networks to enhance the 5G infrastructure, with the rollout progressing in phases.

Mafab Communications obtained its 5G license alongside MTN in 2021. However, while MTN launched its 5G services within eight months, Mafab experienced delays due to insufficient telecom infrastructure and delays in receiving its Unified Access Service License (UASL) and numbering plan, which was granted in July 2022. These challenges led Mafab to seek an extension from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), postponing its initial rollout deadline to January 2023.
Despite these setbacks, Mafab remains committed to delivering on its mandate and contributing to Nigeria’s digital transformation. The company aims to enhance connectivity in Kano and Abuja, with plans to expand to other locations, including Lagos, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Kaduna in the future.
The Nigerian 5G market has been experiencing steady growth since its commercial introduction in August 2022, led by MTN Nigeria. As of October 2024, 5G services accounted for 2.33% of the nation’s internet subscribers, with MTN Nigeria commanding a 79% market share and Airtel Africa holding roughly 20%. Mafab’s anticipated rollout is expected to further drive 5G adoption, particularly in cities beyond Lagos and Abuja.
Subscribers interested in Mafab’s 5G services will need to purchase routers to connect to the network. The company is working with multiple vendors to develop these sites in phases as part of its deployment strategy.
Mafab’s entry into the 5G market is poised to enhance Nigeria’s digital landscape, offering faster internet speeds and improved connectivity, which are essential for various sectors, including healthcare, education, and commerce.
