Muhammed Rudman, Managing Director of the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), has emphasized that strengthening local internet traffic exchange is crucial for Nigeria’s digital economy, calling it a strategic necessity for improving speed, security, and national resilience.
Speaking at the recent AfriTECH 5.0 Forum in Lagos, Rudman explained that Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) enable domestic data exchange, offering significant advantages over routing traffic through international links.
Rudman highlighted the dramatic improvement in latency—the delay in data transmission—achieved through local peering. While international routing can introduce delays of 150-300 milliseconds, local exchange via IXPN reduces this to just 5-10 milliseconds. This enhancement translates to smoother video calls, faster financial transactions, more responsive online gaming, and improved performance for cloud-based services.
Keeping internet traffic within Nigeria also delivers substantial economic benefits, saving the nation hundreds of millions of dollars annually in international bandwidth costs. Rudman stressed that such savings support the sustainability and expansion of the digital economy.
On security, he noted that local exchange strengthens data sovereignty by ensuring Nigerian data remains under national jurisdiction, reducing exposure to foreign surveillance and cyber threats.
Rudman also emphasized the role of IXPs in ensuring network reliability. By reducing dependence on undersea cables, local peering helps maintain essential services—such as domestic websites and emails—even during international connectivity disruptions.
To maximize these benefits, Rudman urged broader collaboration among stakeholders. He called on the government to recognize IXPs as critical national infrastructure and to incentivize local hosting. He also encouraged telecom operators to increase local peering and global content providers to deploy more local servers in Nigeria.
“Local traffic exchange is no longer a technical option,” Rudman stated. “It is the foundation for Nigeria’s digital sovereignty, economic competitiveness, and secure digital future.”
