Internet Usage Surges in Nigeria: Lagos Tops the Chart, NBS Report Reveals

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has unveiled its latest findings on internet usage in Nigeria, indicating a significant surge in digital connectivity nationwide. According to data accessed from the NBS database, the total number of internet subscribers reached a noteworthy milestone, standing at 163.8 million as of December 2023.

Despite economic challenges such as subsidy removal and currency fluctuations, the report highlights an encouraging trend of increased internet access among citizens. Comparing figures from the previous year, the NBS reported a notable 9.07% rise in internet subscribers, demonstrating steady growth in digital connectivity.

For the fourth quarter of 2023, the NBS identified the top ten states leading in internet usage across Nigeria:

1. Lagos: Holding the top position, Lagos boasts an impressive 18.9 million internet users, solidifying its status as a digital hub in the country.
2. Ogun: Following closely behind, Ogun State records 9.5 million internet users, reflecting substantial digital presence.
3. Kano:With 9 million internet users, Kano State secures the third position, showcasing its growing digital landscape.
4. Oyo: Oyo State ranks fourth, with 8.4 million internet users, indicating significant digital engagement within the state.
5. Kaduna:Kaduna State reports 7.4 million internet users, affirming its place among the top states in digital connectivity.
6. FCT: The Federal Capital Territory stands out with 5.8 million internet users, highlighting the capital’s digital prominence.
7. Rivers: Following closely, Rivers State boasts 5.6 million internet users, showing notable digital adoption among its populace.
8. Adamawa: Adamawa State records 5.4 million internet users, signaling a growing digital community within the state.
9. Katsina: With 4.6 million internet users, Katsina State displays notable digital participation among its residents.
10. Delta: Rounding up the top ten, Delta State reports 4.4 million internet users, contributing to the overall digital landscape of the country.

The NBS data underscores the increasing significance of internet connectivity in Nigeria’s socio-economic development, as more individuals and communities embrace digital technologies for communication, commerce, and information access.
