INEC Releases Comprehensive Timetable for Nigeria’s 2027 General Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially unveiled a detailed schedule for the 2027 general elections, marking a key step toward enhanced electoral planning, stakeholder mobilization, and process transparency.

According to the timetable, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2027, while Governorship and State Assembly elections are slated for Saturday, March 6, 2027.

Key Preparatory Activities
To ensure a smooth electoral process, INEC has outlined the following major activities:

– Continuous Voter Registration (CVR): Will reopen from April 2026 to January 2027 for new registrations, updates, and PVC replacements.
– Party Primaries: Scheduled between July 1 and September 30, 2026 for selection of candidates.
– Candidate Submission: Political parties must submit candidate lists via INEC’s online portal from October 1 to October 31, 2026.
– Final List of Candidates: To be published by INEC on November 15, 2026.
– Campaign Periods: Presidential and National Assembly campaigns begin November 18, 2026; state-level campaigns start December 15, 2026.
– PVC Collection: December 2026 through February 2027.
– Voter Register Display: Provisional voter register to be displayed for public verification in October 2026.
– Staff Training and Logistics: Ad-hoc staff training and material distribution will take place in the months leading to the elections.

The release of this schedule comes amid ongoing debates on electoral reforms, including a proposal before the National Assembly to shift the 2027 presidential and governorship polls to November 2026. This adjustment aims to ensure all election petitions are resolved before the May 2027 inauguration.

Other proposed reforms include mandatory electronic transmission of results, early voting provisions for officials and security personnel, and stricter penalties for electoral offenses.

INEC has urged all stakeholders, political parties, civil society, media, and citizens—to engage early and adhere to the electoral timeline. The commission emphasized that broad participation, compliance with regulations, and collective commitment to credible and peaceful elections will be essential for the success of the 2027 polls.

This structured timeline reflects INEC’s commitment to improving predictability, transparency, and public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
