IHS Nigeria, a subsidiary of IHS Holding Limited, has stressed that protecting Nigeria’s communications infrastructure is critical to building a stronger digital economy. The company reaffirmed its commitment to working with government and industry stakeholders to create a resilient infrastructure landscape that can support the nation’s digital growth.
Speaking in Lagos at a stakeholder engagement forum organised by the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters Association (NITRA) in collaboration with the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), the Director of Administration Operations at IHS, Mr. Sadisu Jubrin, said legislation alone cannot curb recurring incidents of theft and vandalism of telecom assets. He called for a sustainable, multi-faceted approach that combines public awareness, technology adoption, and stronger partnerships with communities and security agencies.
Jubrin noted that IHS has intensified collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) through a joint national advocacy campaign to sensitise communities about the dangers of vandalism and its impact on businesses, especially financial transactions carried out through Point of Sale (PoS) terminals. “We must empower our communities to become the first line of defence against infrastructure sabotage,” he said, adding that the theft of fibre cables and site batteries directly disrupts everyday life.
To further secure critical sites, IHS Nigeria recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to enhance surveillance, improve emergency response, and ensure the prosecution of offenders. The company has also deployed remote monitoring systems powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) to track unauthorised access, predict maintenance needs, and reduce risks to physical sites. In addition, community protection initiatives have been launched to safeguard hub sites, while providing employment opportunities for local residents.
Jubrin revealed that IHS has partnered with G4S to deploy 650 rapid response patrol vehicles nationwide, each fitted with communication systems directly linked to the company’s network operations centre for swift intervention in emergencies.
Also speaking at the event, Associate Director of Government Relations at IHS Towers, Mr. Bond Abbe, underscored the importance of collaboration to address the growing challenge of infrastructure vandalism. He emphasised that government, regulators, security agencies, tower companies, and mobile operators must work together to protect national assets, noting that IHS continues to invest in safeguarding its more than 16,000 towers and 15,000 kilometres of fibre optic infrastructure across the country.
Abbe described the protection of critical national ICT infrastructure as a major priority for IHS, adding that securing the foundation of Nigeria’s digital economy is essential to sustaining growth, improving connectivity, and ensuring industry-wide sustainability.
