Under the administration of President Tinubu, the federal government has appointed Idris Olorunnimbe as the chairman of Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The announcement came alongside the constitution of the boards of the NCC and the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), both under the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
A presidential statement on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed Idris Olorunnimbe as the Chairman, with Aminu Waida remaining as the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer.
Tinubu appointed Waida as the EVC in October 2023, and the senate confirmed the appointment in November same year.
Olorunnimbe previously served on the board of the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), where he chaired the Stakeholder and Governance Committee. During his tenure, he pursued youth employment initiatives and entrepreneurship programmes that impacted thousands of small businesses across Lagos.
Olorunnimbe is the founder of The Temple Management Company, he was previously appointed as chairman of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in March. However, his appointment was withdrawn in July, and Tanko Umaru Al-Makura, a former governor of Nasarawa, replaced him.
Other members of the newly constituted NCC board include Abraham Oshidami as Executive Commissioner, Technical Services; Rimini Makama as Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management; Hajia Maryam Bayi, former Director of Human Capital & Administration; Col. Abdulwahab Lawal (Rtd); Senator Lekan Mustafa; Chris Okorie; Princess Oforitsenere Emiko; and the board secretary.
The presidency also set up the USPF board, where Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, was appointed as Chairman and Idris Olorunimbe as Vice Chairman.
The Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) was established under the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003 to promote widespread access to telecommunications and ICT services across Nigeria, particularly in unserved and underserved communities.
Idris Olurunnimbe’s appointment as chairman of the NCC board marks a new phase for the commission. As he steps into the role, attention will turn to how the board navigates ongoing developments in the telecom sector and supports the broader goals of connectivity and regulatory effectiveness in Nigeria.
