Galaxy Backbone Expands Fibre Optic Network to Lagos, Ibadan, and Ilorin

Galaxy Backbone (GBB), the Federal Government’s information technology and shared services provider, has successfully extended its fibre optic network to Lagos, Ibadan, and Ilorin. This expansion is part of Phase II of the National Information and Communication Technology Infrastructure Backbone (NICTIB) project.

The development, which marks a significant milestone, has established a robust cross-country optical fibre backbone that now spans over 5,000 kilometers and connects 27 state capitals. With this achievement, GBB has solidified its role as Nigeria’s primary digital backbone, seamlessly linking the country’s six geopolitical zones.

A key feature of the expansion is the newly completed Abuja-to-Lagos route, which passes through strategic cities such as Minna, Bida, Mokwa, Ilorin, Ogbomoso, Oyo, and Ibadan. This closed network ring enhances connectivity between Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub, and Abuja, the federal capital, ensuring service redundancy and minimizing potential network downtime.

Professor Ibrahim A. Adeyanju, Managing Director/CEO of Galaxy Backbone, highlighted the impact of this development, stating, “The expansion of our fibre optic network to Lagos, Ibadan, and Ilorin is a significant step forward in our mission to bridge the digital divide and position Nigeria as a leader in the global digital economy. This advanced infrastructure empowers us to deliver innovative, customer-centric solutions that serve the needs of both the public and private sectors.”

He added that the expanded network supports the government’s digital economy agenda and fosters collaboration with private sector organizations seeking to leverage Galaxy Backbone’s infrastructure, further positioning Nigeria for global competitiveness in the digital space.
