Former Minister, Isa Pantami Criticizes Bosun Tijani Over NCAIR Relaunch

Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, has criticized his successor, Bosun Tijani, for relaunching the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR). Pantami expressed displeasure at Tijani’s announcement, feeling that his “legacy” was being claimed.

Pantami’s criticism came after Tijani announced the relaunch of NCAIR with the support of global tech company, Cisco, stating that the capacity of the Centre has been improved. However, Pantami countered Tijani’s claims, stating that NCAIR was built and commissioned in November 2020, almost four years ago, during his tenure. Pantami emphasized that the NCAIR was effective and had trained thousands of Nigerians, asserting that legacy is achieved, not claimed.

In response to Pantami’s remarks, Minister Tijani provided further details on the “new and improved” NCAIR and the initiatives introduced to support its relaunch. These initiatives include providing NCAIR with access to over 2500 virtual CPUs for use by the Nigeria AI Collective, connecting NCAIR to 1 petabyte of storage at GBB, establishing a dedicated lab for state and enterprise AI research projects, and allowing AI hubs and pods across the country to connect remotely to the new computing infrastructure.

Additionally, Minister Tijani announced other policy initiatives that emerged from the Ministry’s National AI Workshop, including the launch of the country’s first Multilingual Large Language Model. He also disclosed partnerships and developments aimed at accelerating the development of AI in Nigeria, such as the partnership between 21st Century Technologies, Galaxy Backbone, and NCAIR Nigeria to accelerate the development of AI projects of national interest.
