FG LAUNCHES iSTEP TO EMPOWER YOUTH INNOVATION AND TRANSFORM ECONOMY

The Federal Government of Nigeria through the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology has officially launched the Innovations in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Policy (iSTEP) Program, an initiative aimed at empowering youth-driven innovation and driving Nigeria’s economic transformation.

The launch took place through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry and the Humanity Advancement Innovation Network (HAIN), a partnership to foster collaboration and innovation, ultimately contributing to Nigeria’s sustainable development and economic resilience.

According to the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, the program’s objectives align with President Bola Tinubu’s eight point agenda, which emphasize the importance of  innovation, science, and technology in driving economic transformation and sustainable development. He said,

“The program underscores Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging innovation and technology to address pressing challenges in key sectors such as agriculture, energy, and industrial development.

“The program will also focus on enhancing food security through agricultural and green innovation, as well as promoting inclusive economic development by fostering innovation-driven enterprises.”

He also revealed that the iSTEP program is designed to provide a platform for young innovators to develop innovative solutions, drive entrepreneurship, and create jobs. He said,

“In addition to training innovators, the program also seeks to establish 2,500 youth-led innovative enterprises, which will drive economic growth and competitiveness.

“These enterprises will be supported through various initiatives, including mentorship programs, funding, and networking opportunities.

“The program also involves the development of six Innovation Academies and three iSTECH City Hubs, which will serve as centers of excellence in technology and innovation.

“These hubs will provide a platform for innovators to collaborate, share ideas, and develop new technologies.

“Furthermore, the iSTEP Program aims to create 5,000 new jobs, contributing to national efforts to tackle unemployment.”

Overall, the launch of the iSTEP program underlines the Federal Government’s efforts to promote innovation, science, and technology, and drive economic transformation in Nigeria.
