Federal Government to Implement Reciprocity Principle in Visa Issuance

The Nigerian federal government has announced a significant change in its approach to issuing visas to foreign travelers. The principle of reciprocity will now be applied, ensuring that countries with strict visa requirements for Nigerians will receive similar treatment when their citizens apply for visas to Nigeria.

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, revealed this policy shift during the Business Day Conference. It comes in response to recent actions taken by some countries, such as Turkey excluding Nigeria from its e-visa application and Ethiopia removing Nigerians from visas-on-arrival options. Additionally, Seychelles had banned Nigerians from visiting for holiday purposes.

Under this new policy, every country’s citizens seeking visas will receive treatment equivalent to what Nigerians face when applying for visas to those countries. Minister Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of protecting the interests of Nigerian travelers.

He stated, “Any country that does not give me the visa on arrival cannot have visa on arrival in Nigeria. I’m sorry but it is the truth.”

Nigeria aims to establish equitable partnerships with foreign nations, particularly concerning investments. A committee has been tasked with providing recommendations on how to address visa issuance policies with other countries.

Minister Tunji-Ojo also highlighted the importance of changing perceptions, emphasizing that it affects a country’s reputation and relationships with other nations. He emphasized that Nigeria, as the largest economy in Africa, seeks balanced and respectful partnerships while recognizing the unique assets that other countries possess.

The Minister’s message is clear: Nigeria is advocating for a fair and reciprocal approach to visa policies, promoting mutual respect and cooperation among nations.
