Expert Calls for AI Regulation and Growth of Data Centers in Nigeria

Engr. Ikechukwu Nnamani, CEO of Digital Realty Nigeria, has emphasized the need for robust regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the expansion of data centers in the country. He stressed the importance of developing ethical AI solutions and noted that non-ethical solutions currently dominate the space, both in Nigeria and globally, as companies prioritize profit over ethical considerations.

Nnamani highlighted efforts in countries like the U.S., where both the government and tech companies are working to regulate AI to ensure its ethical use and mitigate potential harms. He also acknowledged that AI adoption in Nigeria is still in its early stages, giving the government an opportunity to assess risks and create policies that promote ethical practices in AI development.

On the concern that AI might lead to job losses, Nnamani reassured that AI would instead drive upskilling and improve efficiency, urging Nigerians to embrace the technology for better productivity.

In discussing the state of Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, Nnamani pointed out that while data centers have increased in number, the country still falls far short of the capacity needed to support its growing digital economy. He called for more investment and government support to address challenges like power supply and forex instability, which hinder the growth of data centers.

Nnamani’s comments came during a visit by the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters’ Association (NITRA), as part of their ICT Growth Conference themed, “Impact of AI on National Development: Prospects, Policies, and Challenges in Nigeria.”
