Former President John Dramani Mahama has made a historic political comeback, securing the presidency in Ghana’s 2024 election after two previous unsuccessful attempts. Mahama, the leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), defeated Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), who conceded defeat on Sunday.
This victory makes Mahama the first Ghanaian president in the Fourth Republic’s 30-year history to regain the presidency after being voted out of office.
Ghana’s struggling economy played a pivotal role in the election. The country is grappling with a debt default and a $3 billion bailout deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Mahama, 66, campaigned on promises to “reset” Ghana’s economy, renegotiate parts of the IMF deal, and create a “24-hour economy” to address widespread unemployment, particularly among youth.
Mahama’s political career is one of both triumphs and challenges. He previously served as president from 2012 to 2017 but lost reelection amid public dissatisfaction over corruption allegations and a severe energy crisis that caused frequent power outages, locally known as “dumsor.”
Despite these setbacks, Mahama leveraged his international experience, including his leadership role during the Ebola crisis as chairman of ECOWAS, to counter criticism. His campaign emphasized his readiness to lead Ghana through its current economic challenges.
Mahama has pledged to tackle corruption by creating a new office to scrutinize government procurement above a $5 million threshold, addressing what he calls a major source of corruption in Ghana. He also voiced support for the controversial anti-LGBTQ bill passed by Ghana’s parliament in February, a stance that has drawn international criticism.
Born in northern Ghana to a politically connected family, Mahama’s early experiences during the 1966 coup shaped his worldview. A writer and Afrobeat enthusiast, he detailed his journey in his memoir, My First Coup d’Etat – And Other True Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa.
Mahama’s victory reflects growing public dissatisfaction with the ruling NPP’s handling of the economy and a desire for change. Mustapha Gbande, a spokesperson for Mahama’s campaign, said, “People are looking for change and they trust Mahama to steer the country in a better direction.”
