Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso, who was recently nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, officially commenced his duties on Friday, September 22, 2023, in an acting capacity as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). His formal appointment is pending confirmation by the Senate. This transition follows the resignation of Mr. Godwin Emefiele from the role of CBN Governor.
A statement by the Director, Corporate Communications, Isa AbdulMumin, says that in a similar vein, the Deputy-Governors-Designate have also assumed their roles in acting capacities following the formal resignations of Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, Mrs. Aishah Ahmad, Mr. Edward Lametek Adamu, and Dr. Kingsley Obiora as Deputy Governors of the CBN.
Dr. Cardoso, along with his colleagues, took the relevant oaths of office during a brief ceremony held at the Bank’s Headquarters in Abuja on Friday, September 2023, and they are now dedicated to managing the monetary and financial sector policies of the Federal Government.
Dr. Cardoso, an accomplished Economic and Development Policy Advisor and Financial Sector Leader, has a wealth of experience spanning over three decades. His career includes serving as Chairman of Citi Nigeria and Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos. He holds degrees from Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom, where he studied managerial and administrative studies, as well as a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School, United States of America.
It is important to note that Dr. Cardoso and his colleagues were appointed to their respective positions at the Bank on September 15, 2023, with their formal confirmation pending Senate approval.
