The Executive Director of The Centre for Cyber Awareness and Development, Dr. Bayero Agabi has called for increased advocacy and sensitization of the public on cyber security, to better secure data and information from nefarious data miners.
The call was made at the Cyber Security Challenge Nigeria (CYCEC NG) 2022 National Hackathon Awards and Cyber Security Conference which held in the Baze University Auditorium, Abuja. The event which saw thought leaders and innovators in the Cybersecurity ecosysystem, representives of mobile network providers, as well as young techpreneurs in attendance was well received and offered in depth conversations around the theme of the conference which was “Emerging Cyber threats : Landsacpe and Defense”.
Dr. Agabi, who was a lead panel discussant, stressed the importance of awareness of the inherent risk factors associated with unregulated cyber use, and the need for citizens to be sensitized on proper usage of the Internet. “Understanding that what goes online can never truly be deleted is important, and knowing that what we cannot publicly display in the real world, should be applicable to the web as well. This will go a long way towards curbing instances of hacking as well as data harvesting.” he said.
Speaking further, the Executive Director also called for the inclusion of regular individuals in discussions of cybersecurity, to better educate them on the pros and cons of Internet usage, as data protection is preferable to recovery.
“Cyber criminals operate at the speed of light while law enforcement operates at the speed of law,” he opined.
