Coca-Cola Alters Bottles to Combat Plastic Waste Pollution

The Coca-Cola System in Nigeria is taking steps to tackle plastic bottle waste pollution by modifying its products’ bottles. The Director of Public Affairs, Communications, and Sustainability at Coca-Cola Nigeria, Nwamaka Onyemelukwe, made this announcement during the Annual System Beach Cleanup exercise in Lagos.

The company’s initiative to modify the products’ bottles is aimed at mitigating the environmental impact of plastic waste. Onyemelukwe emphasized that the decision was prompted by the negative consequences on the environment resulting from the improper disposal of plastic bottles.

According to Onyemelukwe, the company took action to address the issue of the thick Coke bottle containers being repurposed for various uses. They have introduced lightweight plastic bottles to facilitate easy compression and recycling, allowing the bottles to occupy less space after use.

As per her statement, Coca-Cola Nigeria aims to prevent its packaging materials from becoming environmental pollutants or causing any inconvenience. She acknowledged that there is often a perception that Coca-Cola is a major contributor to pollution due to the popularity of their beverages.
