The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the Edo State Governorship Election held on September 21, 2024. Okpebholo, aged 54, secured 291,667 votes, surpassing Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), who came third with 22,761 votes.
INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Faruk Kuta, announced the results at 9:27 PM on Sunday in Benin City, the state capital. Okpebholo won in more than 10 of the state’s 18 local government areas, with Ighodalo securing marginal victories in the others. The APC candidate dominated two of the three battleground senatorial districts, solidifying his lead.

Okpebholo, currently the Edo Central Senator, joined forces with Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor and political heavyweight from Edo North, to defeat Ighodalo, who had the backing of the outgoing governor, Godwin Obaseki. The APC candidate’s alliance with his running mate, Dennis Idahosa, and Obaseki’s estranged deputy, Philip Shaibu, further boosted his victory.
This win marks a significant return to power for the APC in Edo State, which lost control in 2020 after Governor Obaseki defected to the PDP following internal disputes within the APC.
Despite Okpebholo’s victory, protests erupted in the state, with PDP supporters alleging irregularities in the electoral process. The PDP claimed discrepancies between the figures announced and those on INEC’s IReV platform. Governor Obaseki and the PDP Governors’ Forum called for the results to be revisited, accusing INEC of electoral malpractice.
INEC reported that over 2.2 million eligible voters participated in the off-season election, which occurred alongside other governorship races in seven other states due to legal challenges.
