Airtel Nigeria Launches Smartphone Financing Programme to Accelerate 4G Adoption

Airtel Nigeria has unveiled a new Smartphone Financing Programme aimed at accelerating 4G adoption and expanding digital inclusion across the country. The initiative enables eligible Airtel subscribers to acquire new 4G smartphones through flexible, convenient instalment payments instead of full upfront costs.

The programme will begin with the Itel A50, a high-performance entry-level smartphone designed to give customers a seamless upgrade from 2G or 3G devices to faster 4G connectivity.

Airtel CEO, Dinesh Balsingh, said the launch underscores the company’s commitment to empowering Nigerians through digital access.

“Connectivity is opportunity, and smartphones are the key that unlocks it,” Balsingh stated. “Through the Airtel Smartphone Financing Programme, we are enabling more Nigerians to experience 4G technologies without financial strain. This goes beyond providing devices—it is about empowerment, progress, and building a truly connected future.”

To participate, customers must be existing Airtel users and can confirm eligibility by dialling *492#. Approved customers will complete onboarding at any Airtel-owned retail shop, where they can obtain the device after making an initial down payment of ₦19,000 or ₦21,000, depending on the plan.

All payments, including weekly instalments, will be processed through SmartCash, Airtel’s mobile money subsidiary, ensuring secure and seamless transactions.

Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, highlighted the importance of technology-driven partnerships in making the programme sustainable.

“Our mission is to democratise access to technology by removing financial barriers,” he said. “By leveraging SmartCash and intelligent scoring systems from Intelligra, we are creating a sustainable model that supports inclusive digital growth.”

To qualify, subscribers must have been active on the Airtel network for at least three months, maintain a registered SmartCash account, present valid identification (NIN, Voter’s Card, or Driver’s Licence), and provide consent for eligibility assessment.

Airtel says the programme aligns with its broader commitment to advancing financial inclusion, digital empowerment, and nationwide 4G adoption.

Customers can check their eligibility by dialling *492# or by visiting any Airtel-owned retail outlet nationwide.
