World Safer Internet Day 2020 ;Imperative For Skills Acquisition and Economic Development

In today’s world where almost all businesses and transactions are done via  the use of the internet, cyber warfare on the rise, businesses constantly under threats due to sophisticated growth of cyber attacks which are linked to wide spread use of technologies, a surge in connected devices  and computational endeavors and the unpreparedness for the global warming, cyber pests are constantly posing challenges to organisations in breaches of data  and massive compliance threat For these reasons and many others are at the center of attraction at the world safer internet day 2020.

The event which took place at the Center for Information Technology Studies (CITS) organized by the Centre for Cyber Awareness and Development in Collaboration with the Nigeria Internet Group (NIG)

Welcoming the audience in his remarks, the president, Centre for Cyber Awareness and Development (CECAD) Bayero Agabi laid emphasis that creating awareness for internet safety in Nigeria cannot be over- flogged going by the increasing incidences of cyber-attacks, bullying and cyber crime.

Addressing the audience, the executive secretary, Nigeria Internet Registration Association, (NIRA) Mrs. Edith Udeagu stated  that there is no complete internet safety. She urged parents to monitor the acitivities and ensure the safety of their children online adding that NIRA as empowered by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is committed to ensuring that Nigerian have a safe domain to host their websites.

As the world marks the world safer internet day, concerns are raised as to how its safety and applicability can be achieved and sustained.at the panel discussion, Wale Adelomo of the founders Institute noted that the more important things to look out for online are opportunities that abound for the youths. He charged the youth to seek more knowledge of their own rights and how they can be safe online.

In his submission, Gbenga Sesan, CEO paradigm Initiatives Nigeria also added that the youth should focus on three areas of protection namely; protection of making use of the global resources, protection of the nation’s economy through innovative thinking that will address national address and global interest.

In her view, Country Manager, Digital Information Security Solutions and founder, NoGofallMaga, Confidence Staveley said that no technology can stop social Engineering, according to her, it is cyber awareness that will do it, she further said that the youth need to know the inherent and unprecedented opportunities the internet has to offer and use the resource to increase their skills.

The event which was anchored by no less a person than a veteran and former General manager cooperate communications Nigeria Postal Service NIPOST Mr. TAYE OLANIYI who ensured the event was as engaging and comical as it should.
