President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his historic and unanimous election as Chairperson of the Council of the World Customs Organisation (WCO)—the first Nigerian to hold the prestigious post in the organisation’s 73-year history.
The election took place on Saturday in Brussels, Belgium, where the WCO is headquartered. The organisation comprises 186 member countries and serves as the apex decision-making body in global customs administration.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described Adeniyi’s emergence as a monumental milestone and a symbol of Nigeria’s growing international stature, particularly in customs reform and digital transformation.
“The hoisting of the Nigerian flag at the WCO headquarters for the first time since its establishment in 1952 is not just symbolic—it marks a moment of pride and validation for our country,” the President said.
President Tinubu praised the Customs CG for leading key institutional reforms since his appointment two years ago, citing improved revenue generation, enhanced stakeholder engagement, and the digital transformation of customs operations as some of Adeniyi’s notable achievements.
“I congratulate the Customs boss for bringing pride and validation to our country and the economic reforms. I urge the new Chairperson of the WCO to live up to the expectations of the global council and even surpass them,” Tinubu added.
The President also expressed appreciation to the WCO Secretary-General and member states for electing Adeniyi and pledged Nigeria’s full support for his leadership of the Council.
Adeniyi will formally assume duties as Chairperson of the WCO Council on July 1, 2025, taking over from Edward Kieswetter, Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service.
The WCO Council serves as the supreme governing body of the global organisation. It guides the operations of customs administrations worldwide by promoting standardisation, modernisation, and the adoption of best practices. All technical and working bodies within the WCO report directly to the Council.
Adeniyi’s election marks a significant leap for Nigeria in international customs diplomacy and affirms the country’s leadership role in shaping the future of global trade facilitation and customs cooperation.
