The Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, has emphasized the transformative potential of technology in fostering economic growth and addressing societal challenges. Speaking at the FutureMap Academy Workshop in Hadejia, Jigawa State, Kashifu called on policymakers to harness the unique resources and talents within their states to drive prosperity.
The workshop, themed “AI for Office Productivity, Design Thinking, Agriculture, Health, Education, Energy, and Climate Change,” brought together academics, professionals, startup founders, students, government officials, and NGOs to explore the impact of technology in diverse sectors.
In his address, Kashifu highlighted the untapped potential in Jigawa’s large pool of computer science graduates, urging policymakers to equip them with skills to contribute meaningfully to the state’s economic development. Drawing from his personal journey in digital transformation, he underlined the importance of mentorship in inspiring young people to pursue careers in technology.
He also shared success stories of young Nigerians who transitioned from local roles to high-paying remote jobs in international companies. Kashifu stressed the need for policies that build remote work competencies while advocating for the integration of technology in agriculture and other sectors to create employment opportunities and boost productivity.
Kashifu demonstrated practical applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and suggested that government services like land registration and birth certificate issuance could benefit from digital transformation, reducing bureaucracy and improving efficiency. He also showcased how NITDA leverages AI to enhance its operations and called on attendees to adopt a strategic mindset, starting with small technological changes in their daily workflows.
Huawei and Jigawa State Commit to Digital Transformation
At the event, Huawei reaffirmed its support for Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda, particularly in the northern states. Dr. Nihinlola Mary Fafore, a representative of Huawei, highlighted the company’s vision to empower individuals and communities with digital skills, foster innovation, and bridge the digital divide.
Jigawa State’s Technical Adviser on ICT and Digital Economy, Dr. Rislan Abdulazeez Kanya, praised the collaboration between NITDA, the state government, and partners, stressing the importance of leveraging local talent and implementing strategic policies to uplift communities through technology.
The workshop was organized by the FutureMap Foundation in partnership with NITDA, Jigawa State, Huawei, Cosmopolitan University, and the Open School Initiative. The initiative aligns with the foundation’s mission to provide tech education and foster public-private collaboration in building a robust technological ecosystem in Nigeria.
