The Federal Government has renamed the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University in honor of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), who recently celebrated his 90th birthday. The announcement was made by Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, after the Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The renaming recognizes Gowon’s leadership during Nigeria’s Civil War and his contributions to national unity and education, including the founding of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The decision requires National Assembly approval to be finalized.
The University of Abuja, established in 1988, is a major federal institution known for its diverse academic programs. While some have praised the gesture, others have called for improvements in university infrastructure and funding alongside symbolic recognitions.
