NIPOST Cracks Down on Illegal Courier Operators in Osun State

The Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST) has initiated a crackdown on unregistered courier service providers in Osun State as part of its efforts to regulate and sanitize the industry.

During a one-day enforcement operation against illegal courier and logistics operators, Dotun Sonde, General Manager of the Courier and Logistics Department at NIPOST, emphasized the dangers posed by these unauthorized operators. He noted that their activities threaten the safety of residents.

Sonde revealed that investigations had uncovered some illegal operators being used for the movement of illicit drugs and arms, putting lives and properties at risk. “Many people just need to know that most of the unlicensed, unregistered, illegal operators engage in unethical practices,” Sonde said. “For instance, some of these illegal operators carry small arms and ammunition, some carry illicit drugs, some carry despicable things that I don’t want to start mentioning here, sex toys and others. This is because they are not traceable, they are not registered, and they are not licensed.”

Highlighting the security risks, Sonde pointed out that criminals often exploit these unregulated services to avoid detection by law enforcement. He underscored the importance of using licensed courier services to ensure safety and traceability.

Regarding the scale of the problem, Sonde stated, “Based on postal statistics and surveillance, the market intelligence we have done, in Osun State alone, we have over 500 illegal courier operators. You can see that we are just scratching the surface and this is the first time we are conducting this enforcement activity in Osun State, which means that we are just getting started.”

NIPOST’s initiative aims to protect residents and ensure that courier services operate within legal and ethical boundaries.
