Microsoft Shuts Lagos Innovation Center: 200 Jobs at Risk

Microsoft’s African Development Centre (ADC) in Lagos, Nigeria may face closure, though Microsoft has not issued an official statement regarding the matter. The staff was reportedly informed of this development on Monday, with indications that affected employees might receive their salaries and HMO benefits until June. However, a source within Microsoft’s Lagos office neither confirmed nor denied these claims when contacted.

While the specific reasons behind the potential shutdown remain unclear, industry insiders suggest it could be linked to Nigeria’s current economic challenges. Notably, the ADC in East Africa, located in Nairobi, Kenya, appears unaffected by this decision. Launched in Nigeria in 2022 as part of Microsoft’s $100 million investment in two African development centers, the Lagos ADC aimed to harness local talent to address global challenges.

Since its inception, the Lagos ADC has recruited over 120 engineers and employed more than 200 individuals. At its launch, Managing Director Gafar Lawal expressed ambitions to hire 500 engineers by 2023, a target that was reportedly surpassed. The center was inaugurated by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isah Pantami, and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, with a vision to foster tech solutions addressing both local and global issues.

Microsoft’s goal with the ADC was to attract exceptional engineering talent across Africa, enabling them to work on innovative solutions with global impact while remaining rooted in their home countries. This initiative also aimed to bolster Microsoft’s presence in Africa, supporting partners and customers in sectors vital to the continent’s development, such as FinTech, AgriTech, and OffGrid energy. Additionally, the ADC facility in Lagos housed the Microsoft Garage, a platform dedicated to scaling innovation within the local tech ecosystem.
